What is forging?

Forging is the application of thermal and mechanical energy to steel billets or ingots to cause the material to change shape while in a solid state.This process of forging is mainly used in the iron and steel manufacturing industry.

It tends to strengthen the material by taking care of the cracks and waste spaces within the metal by sealing them. There are different types of forging processes like impression die forging, cold forging, open die forging and seamless rolled ring forging.

The process of forging is preferred where a component requires higher strength. Also, it assures uniformity of composition when compared to casting. Forged material has a firm grain structure which makes them stronger in order to handle impact better than cast material. This firm structure also excludes cavities and porosity from the composition.

Casting is the process where metal is heated until molten.While in the molten or liquid state it is poured into a mold or vessel to create a desired shape.Casting helps in setting these mixtures into solid shapes. Casting can be perfected to higher quality producing material with greater strength and wearability depending on the correct selection of alloys, and heating them to their optimum temperatures.

What are the difference between forging and casting?

Therefore, casting and forging are different from each other. Forged parts have higher tensile sand fatigue strength than the casted parts. Both casting and forging have their own sets of advantages like casting provides a large range of alloy choices. The tools used in casting are cheaper than the ones employed in forgings. Casting has no problem in dealing with the complicated parts.The parts produced by forging process are considered superior to casting process because of their compact structure, good grain size and small porosity.
