Tackling High-Temperature Brittleness
One of the challenges faced during the production of 27MnCrV steel was the issue of high-temperature brittleness using conventional austenitization quenching techniques. This led to lower and unstable impact toughness.
Two Innovative Solutions
To overcome this hurdle, two innovative solutions were devised:
1.Rapid Quenching After Tempering
By employing rapid quenching after tempering, high-temperature brittleness was effectively avoided, and superior toughness was achieved. Although this method demands relatively strict heat-treatment equipment requirements, the benefits far outweigh the costs.

2.Subcritical Quenching
Subcritical quenching, on the other hand, offers a more cost-effective solution. By adjusting heating temperatures and soaking times, the steel’s performance was improved, enhancing its toughness while maintaining high strength.
Optimized Process Parameters
For those interested in the specifics, here are the optimized process parameters for 27MnCrV steel:
Austenitization Heating Temperature: 780°C
Quenching Heating Soak Time: 15 minutes
Tempering Temperature: 630°C
Tempering Soak Time: 50 minutes
Superior Mechanical Properties
The application of subcritical quenching led to impressive results. Post-treatment, the steel exhibited a yield strength (Rt0.6) ranging from 820 to 860 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength (Rm) between 910 and 940 MPa, and an impact toughness (Akv) between 65 and 85 J. Notably, the steel’s ductility remained at a remarkable 100%, ensuring top-tier performance.
