The production and quality of large forgings are crucial indicators of a country’s industrial development. The material of choice for large forgings is typically alloy steel. In this article, we will delve into some key classifications of steel used for large forgings, focusing on two main categories:

Alloy steel for large cold rolling mill forgings: Large cold rolling mills operate under harsh conditions, including high-speed rolling and immense rolling forces. As a result, the surface of large rolling mill forgings is prone to defects such as roughness and wear. The central hole and surface of the rolls are susceptible to fatigue cracks, directly impacting the service life of the rolls.

To enhance the lifespan of large rolling mill forgings, the steel used must possess high strength, an adequate surface hardening layer, high wear resistance, resistance to surface peeling, and heat impact resistance. Currently, the chemical composition of steel used for large cold rolling mill forgings primarily consists of high-carbon chromium alloy steels such as 9Cr, 9Cr2, 9CrSi, 9CrV, 9Cr2.0, 9Cr2W, among others. In recent years, new series like Cr3 and Cr5 have been introduced, and the development of Cr6 steel rolls is also underway.

Alloy steel for large pressure vessel forgings: with various reactors, boilers, and high-pressure vessels trending towards larger parameters in sectors like power, chemicals, and petroleum, the structure has gradually shifted from using steel plate-welded structures to using large forgings in welded structures.
